Tip the Wink 
I just found your comments on “God is an Englishman.”” I recently re-read it for the third time and consider myself a hard-core fan of Delderfield’s writing. I am currently re-reading “The Avenue.” I am also a former (30 year) resident of Portland where both my son and daughter-in-law have been librarians. I’ve read every Delderfield book I’ve been able to find over the years and have several well-worn copies.
