What I’m listening to…

Playback by Tom Petty, MCA boxed set released November 20, 1995. Six CDs.

Playback is a box set compilation by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released in 1995. It contains popular album tracks, B-sides, previously unreleased outtakes, and early songs by Petty’s previous band Mudcrutch.

In case you didn’t already know or haven’t guessed, I really dig Petty, and have for a long time. I like it LOUD.

  1. Margot Kinberg says:

I’ve always liked Tom Petty’s music very much, both his solo work and his work with the Heartbreakers and the Traveling Wilburys. I was lucky enough to see him in concert shortly after Free Falling came out. It was a great experience.

  2. Jeff Meyerson says:

The last time I bought a 6 CD set was, let’s see, oh yeah, never. I like Petty somewhat but was never that much of a fan, but I do like the Wilburys stuff a lot. I think I was just never that familiar with his stuff.

    • I like the Wilbury albums, the first more than the second, quite a bit too. I got this set through Amazon Music for super cheap a few years back. The only physical multiple CD sets I buy are the Mosaic jazz ones, and those rarely any more.

  3. Steven A Oerkfitz says:

I’m a big Petty fan. I have most of his cd’s including the boxed Live set and the American Treasure set which came out after his death. I really enjoy his covers, especially The Count Five’s Psychotic Reaction from this set. I still buy cd’s. I can download but can only play back my computer which has pretty crappy speakers. I also still don’t feel I really own something unless I can hold it in my hands. Never a big fan of the Traveling Wilburys. A little lightweight to me.
Petty was really prolific over a long period of time. A lot to enjoy here. Saw him once around 1980. Remembered he encored with a cover of Shout.

    • I wondered if you might not be a Petty fan, Steve, glad to hear you are. You have more of his stuff than I do, I have a physical Greatest Hits CD and this set and that’s it, but I play them a lot. As for Wilbury’s, I mostly just listen to the first album, it has several songs I like, including “Last Night”.

  4. tracybham says:

I am not familiar with Tom Petty’s songs, but I like Free Fallin’ so I bet I would like a lot of the songs on these discs.

  5. I have six or seven Tom Petty albums included a 2-CD GREATEST HITS collection. Like you, I like to play music like this LOUD! So when Diane goes shopping…

  6. stevelewis62 says:

I used to collect boxed CD sets like this, but I stopped when I found I never listened to them. I’m not sure why. Too much of a good thing? Maybe.

  7. Evan Lewis says:

I wouldn’t not never have guessed.
