There is a great deal to be thankful for today, and every day! I’m so thankful to be alive, thankful for my wife, our home and garden, the cat, to be living where we do.
It’s a cool, blustery, rainy day here in Portland, just right for Thanksgiving, it seems to me. It’s just the two of us, (plus the cat) but we make the whole meal, or our version of it, because we enjoy it so and love the leftovers.
The 16-lb. turkey was brined last night, came out of the solution at 6am this morning, and has been drained and will be ready to go in the oven in a few hours. It makes the house smell so good! We’ll also be having mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, cranberry-orange mold, and for dessert there will be Dutch apple pie and ice cream. The fireplace is lit and we’ll have a laid-back day, cooking, watching some football, eating, maybe getting in a walk if the rain lets up some.
I hope your Thanksgiving is wonderful.
Since Katie and Patrick traveled home for Thanksgiving, Diane and I are thrilled to have the family together for Turkey Day. The 15 pound turkey is in the oven. The kids want to help with the sides–sweet potato casserole, green beans, Brussels sprouts–while our guests, my brother and his wife, are bringing mashed potatoes. For dessert: apple pie, pumpkin pie, and pecan pie.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving Richard! Same here, it’s just the two of us. we find that makes a perfectly stressless holiday. Pumpkin pie made the house smell wonderful this morning, Turkey goes in the oven in about hour, followed by potato gratin, stuffing, and ginger carrots.
It is a warm Thanksgiving Day in Santa Barbara, and even warmer in Los Angeles. Very unseasonable. We are having a small family Thanksgiving and watching some fun movies and are really enjoying 4 days away from work. There is a lot to be grateful for. A happy Thanksgiving to you.
Sounds yummy! Any leftovers, Richard, can be boxed up and sent to me.
And a mighty happy one to you folks.
Hope it was as wonderful as it sounded. Ours was terrific.
16 pounds for the two of you? Nice. Unlike some, I am a turkey lover and could eat it all year. We just had our private Thanksgiving dinner – a six pound turkey breast, roasted potatoes, stuffing with chestnuts, corn, cranberry Jello mold, and sugar-free chocolate pudding pie with homemade whipped cream for dessert (and my birthday). We have enough for two more full dinners.
The weather was sunny and cold – 31 in the morning, mid-thirties during the Parade, 42 late afternoon – but since we didn’t leave the house, who cares?
Glad yours went well.
In spite of a migraine headache most of the night before and day, the day was good. Barbara did yeoman duty with everything while I vegged out, then ate some turkey and potatoes. I watched a little football and later had a piece of Dutch apple pie. Leftovers today, and my headache has gone. Yay.
We didn’t really celebrate. Stayed home and relaxed. That was nice, though
Belated Happy Thanksgiving to you too. Sorry I’m so late, but I see that you had a nice relaxing day, Rick, and that’s the best kind of Thanksgiving, I think.
