New Arrivals

Which one of these would you start with?

Recently reading an old July 2011 post on the Vintage Hardboiled Reads blog, I realized I hadn’t ever read a book by Jack Higgins (!). So I picked three at random:

East of Desolation Jack Higgins [Berkley, 1968, umteenth printing, new paperback] – adventure/thriller.
A Game For Heroes by Jack Higgins [Berkley, 1970, umteenth printing, new paperback] – adventure/thriller.
The Khufra Run by Jack Higgins [Berkley, 1972, umteenth printing, new paperback] – adventure/thriller.

I’ve read some other authors whom I expect do similar books, Clive Barker, Alistair  MacLean, others, so I think I know what I’ll get here. We’ll see if I’m right when I open one of these and start reading.

You can’t go wrong here. Just pick one at random.

  2. Brian Reynolds says:

I thought he wrote all WWII stuff, are these all like that?

  3. Richard says:

Brian, no, just the one with the swastika shaped building on the cover. I think, not having read any, just going by the blurbs.

  4. Jeff Meyerson says:

Well, Bill is my expert here so if he says pick one at random, who am I do disagree? I’d go with #1 or 3.

  5. Richard says:

I think of both you and Bill as experts, Jeff, so I’ll eliminate #2 for a while. The review I read was of Khufra Run so that may be where I start.

  6. I’ve read all three of those Higgins novels (and a dozen more!). These early books are much better than the more recent ones. Bill and Jeff have it right: you can’t go wrong with any of these novels.

  7. Richard says:

George, it may take me a while to get to any of them, the books are coming From the library in droves – five at the moment. But it’s good to know I picked good ones.

According to Marv Lachman, never read a book with a swastika on the cover.

  10. Cap'n Bob says:

Damnmit! The Capital B in my name didn’t take. Ah-ha, I fixed it on this one.

  11. Richard says:

Bob, I know Marv said that, but I don’t know why. The book is about that building on that island, so I see no harm in it being on the cover.
